Class Descriptions

HOMESTEAD KITCHEN

In the Homestead Kitchen class, we will learn how to use the bounty from the garden, farmers markets, foraging, and farm-raised animals to make delicious food. Together, we’ll bake, cook, and preserve while discovering how to get the most out of every ingredient so nothing goes to waste. The Homestead Kitchen class is a wonderful opportunity for building practical skills as well as developing a love and respect for where our food comes from!

AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE

American Sign Language class is a fun and interactive way to learn the fundamentals of American Sign Language while exploring Deaf culture! Together, we will learn the ASL alphabet, numbers, and basic vocabulary for everyday conversation while learning how facial expressions and body language bring signs to life. Along the way, we will explore Deaf culture, traditions, history, and proper communication etiquette

ART

Hi families! I am excited to create with your artists this year. I’ll be your child’s guide to all things colorful, sticky and creative. Our room is a mess-making, problem-solving, and mind-growing class. In art, mistakes are just beautiful oops moments! We turn accidental marks into new ideas. We’ll focus on the journey of making art, not just the final product. We’ll explore art history, look and work with different types of materials (clay, paint, collage). We will sculpt, we will mix colors until our hands change hue and we will cut and glue until the floor disappears!
You are never to old to learn, so I’ll be learning alongside the kiddos. I am excited and ready to have fun!

TRAVEL THE WORLD

Join us for a journey around the world. In this class we will explore culture, religion, cuisine, agriculture and climate of many different regions of the world. Students will get to help decide locations as well as share independent research about these locations.
We will be flying around the world without ever stepping onto a plane. We are excited to to go on this adventure together!

ZOOLOGY

We will enjoy learning about different animals. Each week we will learn something different like:
Animal classification, invertebrates and vertebrates, endangered animals and why they are endangered, carnivores, herbivores and omnivores, their ecosystems, habitats and food chains.
We will do all this through worksheets, videos, coloring pages, conversations and some show-n-tells.

MUSIC

Music (early elementary)
Students will be introduced to the basics of music theory including learning about pitch/note names, solfege (Do, Re, Mi,…), rhythm, conducting common time signatures, note and rest values, tempo, dynamics, and more all while learning to sing songs and explore various instruments including the piano, kazoos, and various percussion instruments including bells. We will also learn about the different instrument families.

Music (upper elementary)
Students will learn the basics of music theory and go a little deeper when learning about pitch/note names, solfege (Do, Re, Mi,…), rhythm, conducting common time signatures, note and rest values, tempo, dynamics, key signatures, accidentals, and more all while singing songs and exploring various instruments including the piano, recorder, and various percussion instruments. We will also learn about the various instrument families and learn to identify some of the instruments by sight and sound.

Music (middle and high school)
Students will learn the basics of music theory taught in the elementary classes at a much faster pace and go even deeper learning about scales, intervals, and chords. They will learn how to transpose music into a different key and learn to compose(write) their own music. We will sing a little and use the piano and various percussion instruments including handchimes.

Clubs

BOOK CLUB

In book club we will vote between two books to read together and discuss: either “The Magician’s Nephew” or “Farmer Boy”

We will also begin and end the class with poetry from two books: “Alone” (a poetry novel about a teenager who is left behind and has to survive in a deserted town) and “Where the Sidewalk Ends” (a book of fun and quirky poems). We plan to talk about different genres of books, themes throughout our books, character development, interesting details, and favorite parts of our books together. We will also talk about how books transport us to other worlds, and help us relate to and empathize with the world around us.

DRAMA CLUB

This year our budding actors and actresses will have a blast developing their acting skills while learning the basics of drama. They’ll learn to articulate and project their voices and learn how to move on stage. They’ll learn to work as a team while developing listening skills, concentration skills, and building trust to perform improvisation. They’ll use sensory awareness, past experiences, and character motivation to take acting to the next level. They’ll practice all of this and more while performing tableaus, pantomimes, skits, monologues, and improvisation in front of live audiences or on video.
